Technical Note #201

Internal RAM Checksum Errors

Bad checksum errors in internal ram reported during startup imply a corruption of the data stored in the User Preset and Setup memory. In most cases this data corruption will not cause a problem and the error can be cured by SETUP/service/fix internal. Serious corruption will require reformatting of this ram, with the total loss of all User Presets and Setup information.

If this problem occurs more than very rarely, it may be a sign that the backup battery for the internal memory is failing. This battery normally has a life of around 5 years.

The following applies to all H3000 variants

The battery is integrated into the memory chip and cannot be replaced separately, but a replacement part is available from Eventide (P/N 202054) and can be installed by any competent technician after disconnecting power leads. Note that this will cause the loss of all User Presets and Setup information, so this should be backed up via MIDI to a Mac or PC as described in the literature, before the memory part is changed.

The following applies to DSP4000, GTR4000, DSP4500, DSP4000B

The battery is integrated into the memory chip and cannot be replaced separately, but a replacement part is available from Eventide (P/N 202106) and can be installed by any competent technician after disconnecting power leads. Note that this will cause the loss of all User Presets, so these should be backed up to a PCMCIA card (or PC using Vsigfile), before the memory part is changed.

The following applies to H8000 series, Orville, DSP7000, DSP7500, DSP4000B+, Eclipse

The battery is a widely available button cell mounted in a holder on the motherboard and should be replaced with the system powered on to maintain memory contents - the unqualified user should note that this exposes dangerous voltages and MUST refer this procedure to a competent technician.  The old battery should be disposed of according to local environmental recommendations.

The following applies to all Eventide Harmonizer Brand effect units

Failing to replace a failing memory backup battery may eventually lead to total (albeit temporary) loss of system functionality.
